The Panthers and Browns made a trade during the pre-season which shipped quarterback Baker Mayfield to the Panthers for virtually nothing. Mayfield ended up not only winning the starting QB job in Carolina, but the other teammates that he was up against, Sam Darnold and Matt Corral both suffered injuries in the preseason which would have drastically increased Baker’s trade value. The Panthers made out pretty well in not only getting an upgrade at the QB position, but not really having to pay much to get him. The Browns know Baker Mayfield well being the team that originally drafted him first overall back in 2018. Baker has been a player who’s divided the fans over the years. Some Browns fans love him for what he did to turn around the organization. Others turned on him towards the end of his tenure due to underwhelming performances on the field. And still others really never ever gave him a chance due to his flag planting moment in Ohio State in college. Baker now has a chance to resurrect his career in Carolina and prove to the Browns here in week 1 that they not only made a mistake, but a mistake that might cost them a game. The Panthers will be getting back their star running back, a man who the majority of their offense goes through, Christian McCaffrey. If the Browns have any hope to win this game, they have to figure out a way to stop McCaffrey from getting going. He’s a fantasy star and a point scoring machine for the Panthers. If Baker Mayfield and Christian McCaffrey can gel on the field, much like Mayfield and Chubb did in Cleveland, look out. They could be a very dangerous combination for the Carolina Panthers in this game and throughout the entire season. I expect the Panthers offense to be much improved over last year with the install of Mayfield over what they showed last year with Sam Darnold. Expect to see healthy doses of both Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt in this game between the Cleveland Browns and Carolina Panthers NFL Week 1. Chubb and Hunt were both held out of the 2022 preseason to ensure they remained healthy for the regular season which starts today. Chubb and Hunt are in the primes of their careers and are a very scary 1-2 punch for opposing defenses and defensive coordinators to try to scheme around. The Cleveland Browns featuring these two stars in their backfield are one of the hardest teams to figure out. Chubb will get the start for the Browns and will be swapped in and out for Hunt when he needs a breather. If coach Stefanski has his way he’ll give Chubb the first quarter, Hunt the second, Chubb the third, then will swap them in and out in the 4th to close out the game. The Browns also have some other fresh faces this year that will be on full effect here against the Carolina Panthers. Rookie David Bell will be catching passes from Jacoby Brissett along with newly signed free agent Amari Cooper who signed with the Browns early in the off season. Brissett will be starting this game for the suspended Deshaun Watson who will be back in the starting lineup for the first time week 13 against his former team the Houston Texans. If anything were to happen to Brissett this game, you’ll be seeing Preseason star Josh Dobbs enter the game for the Browns. On the defensive side of the ball the Browns will have their full compliments of stars. Myles Garrett will be going after Baker all day along with Greg Newsome and Denzel Ward at the corners, Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah will anchor this defense in the middle along with vetran Anthony Walker at the linebacker positions. This defense has plenty of big, skilled athletes. It will come down to how they react to what Matt Rhule brings them. Myles has said he expects to have a big year all which starts today against the Panthers. If he wants to secure that coveted defensive player of the year award, he’ll need to lead the league in sacks.
