Maker of iconic Cleveland Free Stamp, artist Claes Oldenburg, dies at 93

Dedicated in Cleveland 1991 as the world"s largest rubber stamp, Oldenburg had said the word Free was meant as a tribute to the emancipation of American slaves both during and after the Civil War, and the sculpture is indeed just a short walk away from the Soldiers" and Sailor"s Monument in Public Square. Oldenburg was born in 1929 in Stockholm, Sweden, son of a diplomat. But young Claes (pronounced klahs) spent much of his childhood in Chicago, where his father served as Swedish consul general for many years. Oldenburg eventually became a U.S. citizen. 3News Senior Commentator Leon Bibb has more on the history of the Cleveland "free stamp". https://www.wkyc.com/article/news/nation-world/artist-claes-oldenburg-cleveland-free-stamp-dies-93/95-19d3837a-1d42-4968-b078-fab341ab3575
