With never-seen video, new audio and a “mountain of evidence,” the public hearings by the U.S. House Committee investigating the Jan. 6 attacks on the Capitol began on Thursday â€" detailing not only the deadly violence that erupted that day but also the backstory of defeated president Donald Trump attempting to overturn Joe Biden’s election victory. Thursday’s prime-time hearing opened with eyewitness testimony from police officer Caroline Edwards, the first police officer injured in the mob riot, and documentary filmmaker Nick Quested who had recorded the melee. It also featured the committee’s accounts from Trump’s aides and family members of the deadly siege that they say put U.S. democracy at risk. Congressional leaders Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.) and vice chair Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.), the daughter of former vice-president Dick Cheney, outlined what the committee has learned about the events leading up to that January day in 2021 when Trump sent his supporters to Congress to “fight like hell” for his presidency. “The insurrection has put two and a half centuries of constitutional democracy at risk,” Thompson said. “The world is watching what we do here… It begins here, and it begins now.” In the weeks ahead, the panel is expected to detail Trump’s public campaign to “Stop the Steal” and the private pressure he put on the Justice Department to reverse his election loss. The panel, made up of nine lawmakers, faced obstacles from its start with Republicans attempting to block the formation of an independent body.
