Zhoushan City's blood-red sky explained

Skies turned into an eerie blood-red color in eastern China"s Zhoushan City on May 7. Footage shows the red night sky glowing above homes, sparking panic among residents. Terrified locals could be heard in the footage background as they turned to watch the unusual scene unfold. The Zhoushan Meteorological Bureau clarified that there was nothing wrong with the weather and the crimson sky was caused by the unusual refraction of light from nearby fishing boats. When weather conditions are good, more water in the atmosphere forms aerosols which refract and scatter the light of fishing boats and create the red sky seen by the public.
