White Sox and Yankees Clear Benches as CWS-Josh Donaldson Feud Continues - Umpiring Problem Players

When Chicago and New York fought in the top of the 5th inning as Yankees batter Josh Donaldson stepped to home plate Saturday, the bench-clearing followed a history of animosity. Article: https://www.closecallsports.com/2022/05/sox-yankees-donaldson-fight-officiating.html We revisit our 2017 article that introduced the four classifications of game participants as allies, neutrals, adversaries, or abusers, and concentrate on the latter portion of that list. We expand on this with a concept borrowed from basketball officiatingâ€"that of the disruptor, or a player who through their play, questionable sportsmanship, or otherwise, inserts, provokes, or otherwise contributes to a disruptive hostile game environment. This is an educational and instructional video based on umpire situation handling for repeated instances of misconduct by a certain player who may be deemed problematic or provocative. It traces Chicago-NY"s feud through a play earlier in May in which Donaldson pushed White Sox baserunner Tim Anderson off of a baseâ€"and 3B Umpire Chris Guccione"s successful officiating in ruling Anderson safe, as well as separating the playersâ€"a slide at second base that provoked disagreement, and multiple incidents prior to Crew Chief Greg Gibson"s decision Saturday to issue warnings to both teams, while opting not to eject any participant.
