Cobain’s death in 1994 shocked his fans tremendously. As lead singer and songwriter for the seminal rock band Nirvana he had touched the core of a generation with his music. Despite its official ruling as a suicide, there have been a number of allegations since, insinuating that more sinister forces were at work. Nick Broomfield’s film begins with a poignant portrait of Cobain’s early years and continues on a voyage of discovery that brings Broomfield in touch with some of the strangest characters imaginable. Eventually when he decides to question Courtney Love about her possible involvement in Cobain’s death the film becomes a startling commentary on modern celebrity and tabloid sensationalism.
