Saudi Arabia executes 81 people in greatest mass execution | Saudi Arabia News | NewsRme

Saudi Arabia executed 81 individuals on Saturday, the greatest known mass execution in the kingdom"s modern history, for offences ranging from murder to terrorist organization membership. There were more executions than ever before, surpassing the 63 militants executed in January 1980 for capturing Mecca"s Grand Mosque in 1979, Islam"s holiest site and the biggest assault on the country ever. Even though the world"s attention was still mostly focused on Russia"s conflict in Ukraine, it was not apparent why the monarchy chose Saturday for the executions. During the coronavirus epidemic, the number of death sentence cases in Saudi Arabia decreased, although the country continued to behead inmates under Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and King Salman. Saudi Arabia"s state-run Press Agency reported Saturday"s executions, which comprised persons convicted of different crimes, including the murders of innocent men, women, and children, according to the statement. Some of those killed by Saudi Arabia were members of al-Qaeda, the Islamic State, and supporters of Yemen"s Houthi rebels, according to the kingdom. Yemen"s Houthi rebels have been fighting a Saudi-led coalition since 2015, with the goal of regaining power for the internationally recognized government. The report did not offer a breakdown of those executed or indicate where the executions occurred. Across January 2016, the country murdered 47 individuals, including a prominent Shiite opposition preacher who had spearheaded protests in the kingdom.
