Maybe your bottle is running a bit low and you go to look for it in a shop... Then it hits, the sudden jarring realisation that it’s gone, it"s perfume history... and you’d not noticed! What did you do? Scour the internet for it? Only find dodgy sellers offering it for £100s when it was only £50 to begin with?! The cheek of it! Oh the outrage! But then what did you do? Well you bought it anyway because that’s the only option, right? Discontinuations in perfume are without warning, sudden and brutal. They happen seemingly overnight. You might bag a bargain if you spot the discontinuation early and act fast, but more likely, the perfume will become increasingly difficult to find and pricier. When these fragrances are only distant and hazy memories, that come around the block on the grey market or secondhand sites but once a solar eclipse, they are known as unicorns. I have a few perfumes that I would deem “true” unicorns and a few that are “baby” unicorns; difficult to find, but mostly still findable if you hunt and have a big budget. So on the flip side, what if you never tried these perfumes before they crossed to the underworld? Are they really hidden gems and worth your cash? Sometimes these unicorn perfumes get hyped on YouTube in some kind of positive feedback loop, but is the hype real? Problem is, these can’t be found in shops, so how do you know whether they are worth buying if you can’t try them? You can’t really, you just have to call it... Well, if you are me, you obsess a bit, dither and probably just end up trying them! Anyway I’ve got more to talk about than are here, but this was already a long one… I just got into this, what can I say? I also have some early formulations of some classics, which are gems in themselves, I’m calling those “hiding” unicorns cos you need the batch codes to find them because they can look exactly like other versions.
