“Tiger King” star Joe Exotic re-sentenced to 21 years in federal prison

Lawyers for Joe Maldonado-Passage, also known as “Joe Exotic,” who was made famous by the Netflix series “Tiger King,” said Friday that a federal judge re-sentenced their client to 21 years in federal prison. Maldonado-Passage was sentenced to 22 years in January 2020 for trying to hire two men to kill Carol Baskin, who runs the animal sanctuary “Big Cat Rescue.” One of his attorneys, Molly Palmer, said his team brought forward what they say is evidence of “outrageous government misconduct” in his case, including sentencing entrapment and sentencing manipulation. She said the judge declined to rule on those allegations on Friday. “He’s disappointed, but of course he was prepared for this,” his attorney John Phillips said. He said the team would be filing motions for a new trial and would also move forward with an appeal.
