Olympics live updates Katie Ledecky U S women's 4x200 meter freestyle

Katie Ledecky and the U. S. team took silver in the women's 4x200-meter freestyle relay Thursday morning at the Tokyo Olympics after Ledecky's dramatic anchor leg, increasing Ledecky's medal haul in Tokyo to three with one more race to go Saturday. Earlier in the day's first swimming session, Americans Caeleb Dressel and Bobby Finke each won gold. Later, the women's gymnastics individual all-around final will be held without Simone Biles. Follow here for the latest news, updates and highlights from the Tokyo Olympics. Swimming the anchor leg for the United States in the 4x200-meter freestyle relay Thursday afternoon, Katie Ledecky overtook the mighty Australian team and gave chase after a blazing fast Chinese team but was just a hair late to the final wall. China took gold and the Americans won silver in an exciting race that saw the top three teams all swim under the world record pace. China led nearly wire-to-wire, finishing with a time of 7 minutes 40.33 seconds, which was 0.40 seconds ahead of the late-charging Americans. Australia, the heavy favorites after setting the world record two years ago, took bronze with a time of 7:41.29. The U. S. team featured Allison Schmitt, a 10-time Olympic medalist, who had the Americans in fourth after her leg. Paige Madden moved the United States into third, with China leading at the race's halfway point. Katie McLaughlin kept the U. S. team in third as China and Australia exchanged the lead before Ledecky gave it her best, posting a 1:53.76 split that came just short of catching the Chinese."I think everyone counted us out," Ledecky said on the NBC telecast. "These girls just went lights out and got us in position where I felt I could take on those two ladies next to us. I wish I had another half-second in me. But I gave it my all."The race marked Ledecky's third medal of these Olympics. She won gold in the 1,500-meter freestyle and silver in the 400 meters in Tokyo. She still has the 800-meter race on tap, with that event's final set for Friday night in the United States, Saturday morning in Japan. Ledecky's 200 time in the relay was 1.45 seconds faster than what she posted in the individual 200-meter race earlier in the week, an event in which she finished in a disappointing fifth place. The American women freestylers have amounted to a swim dynasty of sorts. The United States' 4x200 freestyle team, in fact, had won gold at five of the past six Summer Games — since the event was introduced at the 1996 Atlanta Games — including the past two. The United States women were locked in a tight battle with China in their rugby sevens match Thursday at Tokyo Stadium. Then Kristi Kirshe took the field. Coming on as a substitute early in the second half, Kirshe helped break open what had been a 7-7 tie with two tries — the second of which featured a devastating stiff-arm — and Team USA went on to a 28-14 win.
